Australian steelmaker Generation Steel has expanded its proposed green steel project in Collie, Western Australia, increasing the total investment value to A$850 million. The revised development plan includes a new cut-and-bend rebar facility designed to produce site-ready reinforcing steel for Australia’s construction sector. Generation Steel has also partnered with Australian-owned Stride Reinforcement to supply locally manufactured rebar to customers across the country’s east coast.
The Collie green steel plant is expected to produce 450,000 tonnes of ultra-low-emission rebar annually. Once operational, the facility could increase Australia’s domestic rebar production capacity by approximately one-third.The project aims to reduce Australia’s reliance on imported reinforcing steel while protecting major infrastructure and construction developments from global price volatility and supply chain disruptions.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2028. Generation Steel plans to operate the facility using 100% renewable energy and Australian recycled scrap steel from the start. The investment is expected to strengthen Australia’s domestic steel supply chain, support green manufacturing and accelerate the steel industry’s transition towards low-carbon production.
