Queensland’s coal exports recorded a strong recovery in May 2026, rising 7.4% from April and 11.7% year on year to reach 17.28 million metric tons. The increase was driven by improved shipments through key export terminals, reflecting resilient global demand for Australian coal.
Among the major ports, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and Hay Point posted solid year-on-year growth, while Gladstone also reported higher export volumes. Abbot Point remained broadly stable compared to the same period last year. Japan remained the largest destination for Gladstone’s coal exports, followed by South Korea, India, and Vietnam, highlighting sustained demand from major Asian markets.
During the January–May period, total coal shipments from Queensland’s major ports reached 76.35 million metric tons, underlining the state's critical role in global coal supply. The latest export figures indicate continued strength in Australia’s mining and export sector, supported by steady demand from steelmakers and power producers across Asia.
