India is expected to remain one of the world’s fastest-growing steel markets in FY27, supported by strong domestic consumption and continued government investment in infrastructure.India Ratings and Research expects steel demand to record high-single-digit year-on-year growth in FY27, improving from 7.4% in FY26. Construction, engineering and automotive demand, along with a likely recovery in private-sector capital expenditure, will remain key growth drivers.
The rating agency has maintained a neutral outlook for the Indian steel industry. Supportive trade measures, stable raw-material costs and disciplined capacity additions are expected to strengthen profitability, cash flow and credit profiles. Healthy balance sheets may also allow steelmakers to continue expansion without significantly increasing financial pressure.
However, the sector faces challenges from global steel oversupply, geopolitical uncertainty, changing trade barriers and stricter sustainability regulations. Raw-material price volatility, project-execution risks, lower European Union import quotas and the impact of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on exports will require close monitoring.Despite these concerns, India’s infrastructure and manufacturing push is expected to keep the domestic steel demand outlook positive in FY27.
