Kalyani Steels Limited’s manufacturing plant at Ginigeri in Karnataka’s Koppal district has been shut following directions from the Central Pollution Control Board over alleged environmental violations. The CPCB issued the closure order on July 3, citing non-compliance with provisions of the Air Act and Water Act. Acting on the directive, the Koppal district administration instructed HESCOM officials to disconnect electricity to the facility on July 14, bringing steel production to a halt.
A key concern highlighted by authorities was the alleged failure to install the required Online Continuous Monitoring System, which tracks industrial emissions and wastewater discharge. The company later informed officials that the monitoring system had been implemented. However, the district administration said operations cannot resume until fresh instructions are received from the CPCB.
The closure highlights the growing focus on environmental compliance across India’s steel industry. Steel manufacturers are increasingly required to strengthen pollution-control systems, maintain real-time emissions data and follow regulatory standards to avoid production disruptions and legal action.
