A Russian missile strike hit ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine’s largest steel producer, killing two people and injuring several others. The attack on August 16 struck the company’s mining and metallurgical facility in Kryvyi Rih, forcing a partial suspension of operations. The steel plant is part of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, led by Indian-origin billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said two people were killed and 14 others were wounded in the Kryvyi Rih attack.
The incident comes as Russia and Ukraine intensify aerial attacks, putting industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and major production centres at growing risk. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces targeted a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih along with military-industrial facilities in Kyiv.
The disruption at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih highlights the continued pressure facing Ukraine’s steel industry and metallurgical sector, where prolonged conflict has affected production capacity, logistics and industrial operations. Any extended shutdown at major steelmaking facilities could further strain Ukraine’s steel output and supply chain
