Primetals Technologies has completed the modernization of thyssenkrupp Steel’s slab caster in Duisburg, Germany, strengthening production efficiency, flexibility and advanced steelmaking capabilities. The project separated the previously combined casting and rolling line into an upgraded slab caster and a modernized hot strip mill. The new configuration is designed to improve melt shop capacity utilization, process control and slab logistics.
The modernized caster has an annual production capacity of 2.3 million metric tons and can manufacture slabs measuring 257 mm in thickness and between 900 mm and 1,800 mm in width. It is equipped to meet demanding quality requirements for multiphase steels, high-strength steels and silicon steel grades used in electric mobility, motors and generators.Primetals Technologies also integrated advanced systems including DynaWidth, DynaFlex, CC Optimizer Level 2 automation and Dynacs 3D cooling technology.
EcoStar Spiral rolls support dry casting and direct rolling, helping reduce energy consumption by eliminating reheating requirements while lowering maintenance-related operating costs. The modernization was completed with minimal disruption to ongoing production, with around 1,000 personnel working onsite during peak project activity.
