India has achieved a major milestone in sustainable infrastructure with a 1.85-km steel slag road in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, earning a Guinness World Record for the longest road built using processed steel slag aggregates. Developed through collaboration between CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and Jindal Steel, the project demonstrates how steel industry by-products can be transformed into valuable construction materials. Processed steel slag, generated during steel manufacturing, has been used as an alternative to conventional natural aggregates. The technology can help reduce industrial waste, conserve natural resources and promote a circular economy in India’s rapidly expanding road infrastructure sector. The achievement also highlights the growing role of the Indian steel industry in sustainable construction and waste-to-wealth initiatives. Steel slag roads are being explored for highways, industrial corridors and other heavy-duty infrastructure applications. Following the Raigarh milestone, CSIR-CRRI and Jindal Steel are also moving towards a much larger 40-km steel slag road project in Odisha, signalling wider adoption of the technology.
