South Korean steelmaker POSCO is strengthening its automotive steel portfolio with a KRW 480 billion investment in a new Continuous Galvanizing Line at its Gwangyang Works. The No. 8 Continuous Galvanizing Line, or 8CGL, will have an annual production capacity of 450,000 metric tons and is scheduled for completion in 2028. The advanced facility will focus on hot-dip galvanized steel sheets used in automotive exterior panels, particularly for premium vehicles, SUVs and recreational vehicles. Once operational, the project will increase POSCO’s annual hot-dip galvanized steel sheet capacity to approximately 4.95 million metric tons. POSCO plans to integrate artificial intelligence, robotics and real-time process monitoring into the plant to improve product quality, reduce defects and enhance manufacturing efficiency. The line will also connect with the company’s electric arc furnace operations, supporting production of lower-carbon automotive steel for global automakers seeking cleaner material solutions. The investment reflects POSCO’s strategy to strengthen its position in next-generation mobility materials as demand grows for high-quality, extra-wide and lower-carbon automotive steel products.
