Tata Steel is accelerating the use of artificial intelligence, smart surveillance and remote operations to strengthen workplace safety across its mining and steelmaking operations. The steelmaker has deployed more than 10,000 CCTV cameras, supported by AI-enabled monitoring systems that can identify unsafe behaviour and alert supervisors for faster intervention. Over the past 15 years, Tata Steel has also reduced its group-wide lost time injury frequency rate by 38%. Its Connected Workforce platform uses AI-enabled gate passes and plant-based beacons to monitor employee movement and restrict access to hazardous or unauthorised areas. Meanwhile, Integrated Remote Operation Centres allow teams to monitor and control high-risk activities from safer locations. Tata Steel is also applying digital safety technologies to logistics, including driver-fatigue monitoring for thousands of trucks entering its plants daily. Looking ahead, the company expects computer vision, digital twins, autonomous inspections, wearables and connected-worker technologies to play a growing role in industrial safety, highlighting how digital transformation is reshaping modern steel manufacturing.
