Essar Group is set to make a major expansion into the US steel industry with an investment of around $18 billion through its subsidiary, Mesabi Metallics. The plan includes a $15 billion integrated steel complex in Iowa and roughly $3 billion toward its iron ore mining and pelletising operations in Minnesota. The proposed Iowa facility is expected to reach an annual steel production capacity of 10 million tonnes when fully developed, positioning it among the largest steelmaking facilities in the United States. Production is targeted to begin in 2030. A key feature of the project will be its integrated domestic supply chain. Iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ Minnesota operations will supply the Iowa steel plant, connecting mining, processing and steel manufacturing within the US. The investment is also expected to generate significant employment, including up to 6,000 construction jobs and at least 1,750 permanent positions. The large-scale project could significantly expand US domestic steel capacity while strengthening demand for iron ore, infrastructure, logistics and steelmaking technologies. It also marks a major international expansion for India-based Essar Group in the global steel and mining sector.
