Green Metals Industries (GMI) plans to invest more than $500 million in an integrated steel and pipe production complex at the KEZAD industrial zone in Abu Dhabi, strengthening the UAE’s domestic steel manufacturing capabilities. The proposed facility will combine steelmaking, casting, rolling and pipe production under one site, creating a complete production chain from raw material to finished products. The steelmaking unit is expected to have an annual capacity of around 1.2–1.4 million tonnes. Production will rely largely on steel scrap and other raw materials, using induction furnaces, electric arc furnaces and advanced refining technologies. The plant will manufacture billets, blooms, round bars, flat steel and sections across carbon, stainless and alloy steel grades. GMI aims to produce several steel grades that are currently imported into the UAE, helping local manufacturers reduce dependence on overseas supplies and mitigate logistics risks. The first phase will involve an investment of about $250 million, with commissioning planned in stages from early to mid-2028. A second phase is expected to involve a similar investment. The project aligns with the UAE’s “Make it in the Emirates” strategy and could further strengthen the Gulf region’s steel and downstream manufacturing ecosystem.
