Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu has unveiled EvoMaterials, a proprietary technology platform designed to produce low-CO₂, high-purity metals while improving resource efficiency. Built on advanced sulfidation-based processing, the technology is initially focused on increasing the chromium content and chromium-to-iron ratio of ferrochrome. Outokumpu says the process could later be extended to strategic metals such as nickel and molybdenum, while also recovering valuable materials from industrial side streams. The company’s Kemi mine in Finland, the European Union’s only chrome mine, will play a key role in supplying raw material for enriched ferrochrome and high-purity chromium production. Outokumpu plans to scale the technology at a pilot plant in New Hampshire, US, with operations targeted for early 2027. The company aims to demonstrate industrial feasibility by scaling production from kilogram level to approximately one tonne. An industrial-scale facility is targeted for 2030, with potential locations being assessed in the US and Europe. The innovation supports Outokumpu’s strategy to expand into low-carbon metals, critical materials and sustainable metal production.
