Austria-based steelmaker Voestalpine has received key equipment for its new electric arc furnace (EAF) at the Linz steel plant, marking an important milestone in the company’s greentec steel decarbonisation programme. The EAF components, with a combined weight of around 790 tonnes, were delivered to the Linz site in multiple shipments. Manufactured across Germany, Italy and Türkiye, the equipment is now being installed and integrated into the new steelmaking facility in collaboration with Primetals Technologies. The new Linz EAF is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2027. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce approximately 1.6 million tonnes of steel annually while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of production. Voestalpine is simultaneously developing EAF-based steelmaking facilities at Linz and Donawitz as part of its broader transition toward low-carbon steel production. The company expects the two furnaces to help cut carbon emissions by up to 30% by 2029 compared with 2019 levels. The investment strengthens Voestalpine’s long-term strategy to electrify steelmaking and move progressively toward net-zero carbon steel production.
