Canadian steel producer Algoma Steel Group has temporarily suspended electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking following an unplanned outage at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) generating facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The disruption occurred after one of the facility’s turbine units detected an abnormal condition and automatically shut down. Other LSP units remain operational, while technical teams and external specialists assess the affected equipment and determine required repairs.
As Lake Superior Power supplies electricity to Algoma’s steelmaking operations, the company paused EAF production. However, downstream finishing and steel shipping activities are continuing. Algoma currently does not expect a significant impact on committed customer deliveries, although future shipment volumes could be affected if the outage continues. The company expects the EAF production interruption to last no more than 21 days. Algoma is also working with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator on an alternative power arrangement that could allow EAF steelmaking to restart within approximately 10 days.
Meanwhile, Algoma is coordinating with GE Vernova to commission a contracted spare turbine and restore normal power generation. The outage comes as Algoma continues its major transition toward lower-emission, scrap-based EAF steelmaking in Canada.
