China has achieved a major breakthrough in advanced materials by developing an ultra-high-strength T1200-grade carbon fibre that is reportedly 10 times stronger than conventional steel while being thinner than a human hair. The newly developed fibre, known as SYT80, has entered industrial-scale production, making China the first country to mass-produce this grade of carbon fibre at the hundred-ton level.
According to China National Building Material Group (CNBM), the fibre has a tensile strength exceeding 8 gigapascals and weighs only one-quarter as much as steel. Researchers demonstrated its strength by twisting nearly 120,000 microscopic filaments into a rope less than 2 millimetres thick, capable of pulling a coach carrying 54 adults.
Industry experts believe the breakthrough could transform sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicles, wind energy, hydrogen storage, robotics, and high-speed transportation. Analysts also say China’s success strengthens Asia’s growing dominance in the global carbon fibre and advanced materials market.
