Hyundai Steel has installed an advanced robotic coil trimming and sampling system at its wire rod mill in Dangjin, South Korea. Developed by Primetals Technologies in collaboration with robotics specialist Polytec, TrimRob is the first foundry-rated system of its kind deployed at the facility.The automated solution is designed to improve worker safety while increasing operational efficiency. Conventional coil trimming often requires two to four operators per shift to manually cut the head and tail of wire rod coils at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.
TrimRob uses a vision system and specialised trimming tool to count rings, identify tangles and detect overlapping material. Its onboard logic allows the robot to complete trimming and sampling tasks without direct human intervention.
The system can process wire rod with diameters of up to 20mm across different steel grades and strength levels. By reducing repetitive manual work, Hyundai Steel can lower the risk of workplace injuries and shift employees towards higher-value production activities.The installation highlights the growing role of robotics and smart manufacturing technologies in modern steel plants, particularly in high-temperature and labour-intensive operations.
