Construction of New Zealand’s New Dunedin Hospital has entered a major phase, with the first structural steel columns and beams now being installed at the former Cadbury site.The development marks the beginning of vertical construction after months of foundation and site preparation work by lead contractor CPB Contractors. Once completed, the 11-level inpatient building will contain more than 15,200 individual steel components, requiring approximately 11,000 tonnes of structural steel.
Steel fabrication is being carried out by New Zealand companies in Auckland and Christchurch, supporting domestic manufacturing, skilled employment and regional supply chains. The fabrication process is expected to generate around 330,000 hours of specialised work, while steel materials will be transported to Dunedin by road and sea.
The hospital is designed to improve healthcare services and patient movement across different stages of treatment. It will serve communities throughout Dunedin, Otago and Southland.Practical completion of the inpatient building is targeted for late 2030, with the hospital expected to begin receiving patients in 2031.
