UK Steel has welcomed revised government procurement guidance designed to increase the use of domestically produced steel in publicly funded projects.The updated Public Procurement Note introduces a “comply or explain” requirement. Under the new approach, contracting authorities must actively consider UK-made steel and provide clearer explanations when choosing alternative suppliers.
UK Steel described the reform as one of the most important improvements to public steel procurement in recent years. The organisation believes greater transparency and accountability will help convert government support for British manufacturing into practical purchasing decisions.The guidance is also expected to strengthen domestic supply chains, support skilled employment and improve awareness of steel products available from UK manufacturers. Buyers will be encouraged to use the UK Steel Digital Catalogue when assessing sourcing options.
The revised rules follow wider government measures supporting the steel industry, including the UK Steel Strategy and national security procurement guidance.For British steel producers, the policy could create stronger opportunities in major infrastructure and construction projects while ensuring taxpayer-funded spending delivers greater value to the domestic economy.
