Wuhan Iron and Steel Co. (WISCO) has awarded Primetals Technologies a major contract to modernise its compact strip production line in China. The project will convert the existing CSP casting and rolling facility into a conventional hot-strip mill with an annual production capacity of 4.2 million tonnes. The upgraded mill will process 230mm slabs supplied by new conventional casters and reheated through two walking beam furnaces.
The modernised facility will include a high-capacity, single-strand reversing roughing mill, heavy-duty rolling equipment and two advanced edgers. Primetals will also provide complete Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, supported by advanced process-control technology.
This will be only the second CSP-to-hot-strip mill conversion undertaken by Primetals Technologies. The upgrade is expected to improve production flexibility, operational efficiency and steel quality at WISCO’s facility. The 21-month project is scheduled for completion in early 2028, marking another major investment in China’s steel manufacturing infrastructure.
